Marine Air Conditioning – Quick Troubleshooting Guide

When your A/C goes down on the water, it’s more than just uncomfortable—it can turn a good trip into a long one fast. Before you make the call, here are a few things you can check. These are the common issues we see every day in the field.

Unit Not Turning On

What’s usually going on:

  • No power to the unit

  • Tripped breaker or blown fuse

  • Control or thermostat issue

What to check:

  • Make sure you’ve got shore power or the generator running

  • Check your breaker panel—reset anything that’s tripped

  • Verify the control is powered and calling for cooling

Running, But Not Cooling

What’s usually going on:

  • Airflow restriction (dirty filter, blocked return)

  • No seawater flow

  • System is low on refrigerant

  • Condenser starting to foul up

What to check:

  • Pull and clean the air filter

  • Look overboard—are you getting a solid stream of water?

  • Check and clean the seawater strainer

  • Make sure the intake thru-hull is fully open

No Water Flow Overboard

What’s usually going on:

  • Clogged strainer

  • Airlock in the line

  • Pump not running or starting to fail

  • Blocked intake

What to check:

  • Clean the strainer and reseal it properly

  • Listen for the pump—no sound usually means no flow

  • Prime the pump if needed

  • Inspect the intake for debris or growth

Evaporator Freezing Up

What’s usually going on:

  • Not enough airflow

  • Dirty coil

  • Low refrigerant

What to check:

  • Shut the unit down and let it thaw completely

  • Clean the filter and inspect the coil

  • Make sure vents and returns aren’t blocked

Short Cycling (Turning On and Off Constantly)

What’s usually going on:

  • Thermostat issue or bad location

  • Control problem

  • Low refrigerant

What to check:

  • Adjust your thermostat settings

  • Make sure it’s not sitting in direct sunlight

  • Look for any fault codes on the display

Strange Noises or Vibration

What’s usually going on:

  • Something’s loose

  • Blower or fan motor starting to go

  • Debris in the system

What to check:

  • Look for loose hardware or mounting points

  • Inspect the blower wheel

  • Pay attention to when the noise starts and stops

Know When to Make the Call

These checks will get you through the basics, but marine A/C systems aren’t something you want to guess your way through. If the problem keeps coming back—or you’re dealing with refrigerant, electrical, or internal components—it’s time to bring in someone who does this for a living.

At Tide and Iron, this is what we do. Diagnose it right, fix it once, and keep you moving.
