Split Marine Air Conditioning Systems


Split, or direct-expansion (DX), marine air-conditioning systems remain one of the most effective ways to cool cabins aboard many boats and yachts.

But proper operation depends on much more than the compressor turning on.

Refrigerant pressures, superheat, subcooling, seawater flow, condenser condition, evaporator airflow, ductwork, electrical load, controls, and the vessel's actual heat load all affect performance.


Our experience allows us to look at the entire system, not simply replace a component because a pressure or temperature doesn't look right.

When troubleshooting a split marine A/C system, our goal is to determine why something failed before replacing parts.

That distinction can save considerable time and money.


Self-Contained Marine Air Conditioning

Self-contained marine A/C systems package the compressor, condenser, evaporator and blower into a compact unit typically installed beneath a berth, settee, cabinet, or other interior space.


Their compact design makes them convenient, but the installation environment is extremely important.


A perfectly good air-conditioning unit can perform poorly because of inadequate seawater flow, restricted return air, undersized ductwork, improper discharge-air routing, dirty heat exchangers, electrical problems, or insufficient ventilation around the equipment.


At Tide & Iron, we evaluate both the air-conditioning unit and the installation around it.

Because sometimes the problem isn't the A/C unit.


Chilled-Water Systems


Larger yachts often require something considerably more sophisticated.

A marine chilled-water system may incorporate multiple compressors, seawater condensers, circulation pumps, variable-frequency drives, air handlers, control boards, sensors, valves, electrical protection, and centralized control systems.

Troubleshooting these systems requires understanding how all of those components interact.


A circulation problem can look like a refrigeration problem.


A seawater-flow problem can produce high refrigerant pressure.


A sensor or control problem can prevent perfectly functional mechanical equipment from operating.


An improperly balanced chilled-water loop can leave one part of a vessel freezing while another cabin remains warm.


Our experience with marine chilled-water plants allows us to approach these systems methodically—from the refrigeration circuit and seawater system to chilled-water circulation, controls, electrical components, and individual air handlers.


Marine Refrigeration


Marine refrigeration presents its own challenges.

Refrigerators, freezers, cold boxes, ice makers and custom refrigeration systems aboard yachts operate in an environment very different from residential equipment.

High ambient temperatures, limited ventilation, seawater-cooled condensers, long refrigerant lines, compact machinery spaces and constant vessel movement can all affect operation.


We service and troubleshoot marine refrigeration systems by looking beyond the immediate symptom.

If a freezer isn't maintaining temperature, adding refrigerant isn't automatically the answer.


We evaluate refrigerant conditions, compressor performance, evaporator operation, condenser performance, airflow or water flow, controls, insulation, electrical components and the condition of the refrigeration circuit as a whole.

Diagnosis comes before parts replacement.


Watermakers and Reverse-Osmosis Systems


Our expertise doesn't stop with refrigeration.


Tide & Iron also services marine reverse-osmosis watermakers.


A watermaker combines high-pressure pumps, membranes, prefiltration, valves, sensors, electrical controls and specialized plumbing to turn seawater into fresh water.


Understanding each part of that process is essential.


Low production doesn't necessarily mean bad membranes. Poor product-water quality doesn't automatically mean the membrane needs replacement.


Feed-water conditions, prefilters, pressure, flow, membrane condition, pump performance and system configuration all need to be considered.


We troubleshoot the complete system before deciding what needs to be repaired or replaced.
